Plan of Genoa's harbour, published in Luffman's 'Select Plans of the Principal Cities, Harbours, Forts &c. in the World'. The Ligurian Republic had been a French Protectorate since 1797 and was to be annexed in 1805: Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' starts with the sentence: 'Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes'.
