COVENS & MORTIER.

Amsterdam: Jean Covens & Corneille Mortier, c.1733. 510 x 630mm.

A French map of west Africa, with attempts at showing the courses of the Gambia, Senegal and Niger Rivers, the last two incorrectly conflated. At the time France controlled the mouth of the Senegal River with Fort St Louis; the British had Fort St James on the island of the same name, now Kunta Kinteh Island. Both were active in slavery, prompting their explorations upstream.
