Early map of Middlesex

NORDEN, John.

Middlesex Olima Trinoban Tibus.
London: George Latham, 1637. Coloured. 280 x 334mm.

A decorative map of Middlesex, based on Norden's map, engraved for Camden's 'Britannia' by either John Kip or William Hole, but one of only two maps in the series unsigned.

John Norden was a contemporary of Saxton and was the first to plan a series of county histories; however he failed to attract sufficient backing for his enterprise and never completed it. However the county surveys that he did complete were preferred over those of Saxton by both Camden and Speed.
