A map of the Roman province of Thrace, drawn by Ortelius himself for the 'Parergon', his atlas of the ancient world, marking Byzantium (Istanbul), Trajanopolis (Loutra Traianopouleos in Greece) and Philippopolis (Plovdiv in Bulgaria)
Ortelius has taken the outline from Gastaldi's map of south-east Europe (1560) but taking the names of tribes and towns from the classical writers, including Herodotus, Pliny, Strabo, Appian & Plutarch. However the large text box lower right contains names he has been unable to locate.
