Mid-18th century double-hemisphere world map
LOTTER, Tobias Conrad.
Mappa Totius Mundi adornata juxta Observationes Dun Academiae Regalis Scientarum...
Augsburg: T.C. Lotter, c.1775. Original colour. 430 x 650mm.
A very fine example of this double-hemisphere world map after Delisle, with polar projections in the top corners. On the map the routes of early explorers are marked, including Magellan (1520), Le Maire (1570), Noord (1600), Schouten (1616), Tasman (1642) & Dampier (1686), but, strangely considering the publication date, not Cook on his first voyage around New Zealand and Australia. Strangely the mythical island of Friesland (near Iceland in the left hemisphere) is still included and the 'Terra Yedso' connects Japan to mainland Asia.
