A map of Mexico south of to the Gulf of Panama, with Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The tip of Florida and western Cuba appear top right. In the Gulf of Mexico is the phantom island 'Bermeja', the existance of which was still being disputed in the late 20th century.
Engraved by Jan van Somer, this map was first issued as a separate publication in 1656; this example comes from Sanson's Atlas 'Les Cartes Générales de toutes parties du Monde', first issued 1658.
