A map given for free to subscribers of 'The Illustrated London News', colour-coded to show the division of the United States into Unionist & Confederate as the American Civil War began. The day of issue, June 1st 1861, the Federal Army entered Virginia.

The content of the map is not merely military: the routes of the proposed trans-continental railways are marked. The south part of Mexico is shown in an inset.
