Early town plan of Gdansk

A 'map-view' of Gdansk (or Danzig), published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed town plans. The major buildings are shown in profile, with no consideration for perspective. In the foreground a a number of figures illustrating the dress of the wealthy and the the workers. At the time Gdansk was autonomous within the KIngdom of Poland. However when the Hungarian Stephen Báthory came to the to the throne in 1576 he felt he had force the city to accept his authority. He laid siege to the city in 1577, two years after this plan was published. After a six-months stalemate a negotiated settlement saw the city recognise Báthory as ruler of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and pay 200,000 zlotys in reparations.
