A Dutch pirated edition of a 17th century French map

MORTIER, Pierre.

L'Afrique Divisée en ses Empires, Royaumes, et Estats, é l'Usage de Monsieur Le Duc de Bourgogne Par son tres Humble et tres Obeissant Serviteur H. Jaillot. A Paris Avec Privilege de Roy. 1694.
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1694. Original colour. 490 x 595mm.

Slight toning at centre fold.

A large and detailed map of Africa, copied from Jaillot's map of 1674, in turn based on Sanson's map of 1668. The interior of the continent is still largely fictitious, with the Ptolemaic lakes shown to be the source of the Niles. Of the west coast is 'S. Helena Nova', probably a misplaced and uncorrected Ascension Island.
Despite the title this map was engraved and published in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier. Mortier even put the name of Nicolas de Fer, a Parisian map publisher, on the title page of his atlas to improve sales.

BETZ: 158, state i of iv.
