A map of eastern Canada from the Gulf of the St Lawrence to Montreal, with the borders of the Province of Quebec as laid down by the Peace Treaty of 1763 (ending the French-Indian Wars) marked with colour. The four insets are Montreal Island, Montreal City, Quebec City and the St Lawrence between Quebec and Montreal in greater detail.
Jonathan Carver (1710-80), born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, was a shoemaker before joining the army for the Seven Years' War (1756-63), learning surveying. He fought at Crown Point, Lake George, Fort William Henry (where he was taken prisoner) and Fort Edward, ending the war as a captain. Between 1766-8 he explored the Great Lakes area for trade with the Dakota. In 1778 his account, 'Travels through the Interior Parts of North America in the Years 1766, 1767 and 1768', was published with the help of Sir Joseph Banks.
The English original of this map was published in 1776, during the American War of Independence; this edition by the Colonist's French allies, appeard in Le Rouge's 'Atlas Ameriquain Septentrional' the following year.
